Jim Abbott, partner and co-head of Seward & Kissel’s Business Transactions Group (M&A and private equity), has been named a 2018 M&A Trailblazer by The National Law Journal. The list recognized only 27 attorneys nationally who have acted as “movers and shakers in the legal industry who have made an impact in their sector through new types of strategies or innovative matters.”

With 35 years of transaction experience, Mr. Abbott joined shipping industry leader Seward & Kissel 12 years ago, where he became a leading M&A lawyer in the shipping industry, an actively consolidating sector in which Seward & Kissel routinely handles the most noteworthy deals. Recently, Mr. Abbott and a team at the firm represented Belgium-based Euronav in its merger with Gener8 Maritime, which created the leading independent large crude tanker operator in the world with a $2 billion market capitalization. He also recently advised Scorpio Tankers on its $1.1 billion 2017 merger with Navig8 Product Tankers, which made Scorpio the largest publicly traded owner of product tankers.

In addition to transactions involving the maritime finance practice, Mr. Abbott and the Seward & Kissel Business Transactions Group are leaders in investment management industry deals, and also regularly work on media and technology industry transactions and negotiated M&A and private equity transactions in many other sectors, representing public and private companies, private investment funds, investment management firms, financial institutions, business owners, and managers.
